CBP on Balancing Emperical Research with Qualitative Ways of Knowing; MMR approaches for Social Scientists

Concept note.

Thanks to technological advances, social and behavioural research are in the fast lane of
development—modernising the need to balance empirical research with qualitative ways of knowing.
While quantitative methodologies are evolving and unfolding with the aid of computing technologies, the Internet and the wealth of data that the latter offers, on the other side of the spectrum, qualitative research is coping with such scholarly drift. Going by the developing discourse surrounding social science research using mixed methodologies, it can be evenly accepted that combining qualitative and quantitative research methodologies can widen the breadth and depth of scientific understanding and add credence to scholarly inquiry. To bridge the qualitative-quantitative gap and offer an objective-methodical understructure for the young social scientist to build a research career upon, we bring together a collection of lectures from experts in mixed methods research (MMR) in this Capacity Building Programme.

OBJECTIVES
● For social science researchers that are inquisitive about and wish to employ MMR methods, this programme will be a scratch-to-finish guide
● It will elaborate on the plethora of qualitative and quantitative methods, and their possibilities and limitation as standalone research methodologies
● It will cover the paradigms (positivist, interpretive and critical), and research approaches
(inductive and deductive)

● It will also detail the emergence of mixed-method research, providing context for its current
and historical landscape

● It will explain the intricacies of the MMR design and data-analysis frameworks.
● Moving into the core idea of mixed methods research, the CBP will get into data-analysis approaches used in mixed-methods
● It will also help readers understand statistics and perform statistical analyses
